Paragraph · History of Russia · 9th century
Weapons and druzhina of the first Russian princes
⚔️ The weapons of Rus warriors in the 9th century reflected the characteristics of the early period of the formation of Kievan Rus. At that time, the main military force was the princely retinue — professional warriors who constantly served the prince and took part in military campaigns. The members of the retinue defended territories, accompanied the prince during expeditions, and helped strengthen his authority. Armies also included militias of free townspeople and villagers who were gathered during major conflicts. The main goals of these forces were rapid attacks, capturing wealth, and controlling important territories and trade routes. Military campaigns often took place far from their homeland, so warriors needed weapons that were effective and easy to carry.
🗡️ The main weapon of noble warriors was the sword. In the 9th century, swords were expensive and prestigious weapons, usually owned by experienced members of the princely retinue. They had long, double-edged blades and were used both for powerful attacks and close combat defense. Many swords reached Rus through trade connections with Western Europe and through Varangian warriors. More common weapons were spears of different sizes. Spears could be used by both infantry and mounted warriors, and they were effective when fighting in organized formations. Warriors also used axes, knives, and battle axes, which were practical weapons during battles and long campaigns.
🛡️ The shield was one of the most important pieces of protection for a warrior. Rus warriors of the 9th century mainly used round wooden shields reinforced with metal and covered with leather. Shields protected against blows from swords, spears, and arrows, while soldiers could form defensive lines by standing close together behind them. Armor was not available to everyone: wealthy warriors could own chain mail made of thousands of metal rings, while ordinary fighters often used leather protection or fought without heavy armor. This equipment allowed warriors to remain mobile, which was especially important during fast raids and military expeditions.
🚢 Military campaigns of Rus in the 9th century were characterized by high mobility and were often connected with controlling trade routes. Warriors traveled along rivers in boats that allowed them to quickly reach distant territories. During battles, surprise attacks, organized tactics, and the experience of the princely retinue played an important role. Weapons and military organization helped Rus expand its influence, defend its lands, and establish relations with neighboring states. A strong warrior retinue became one of the main foundations of the power of the first princes and played an important role in transforming Rus into a major state of Eastern Europe.
