The Livonian War
⚔️ The Livonian War of 1558–1583 became one of the largest military conflicts during the reign of Ivan IV the Terrible. The main reason for the war was the desire of the Russian state to gain access to the Baltic Sea and control important trade routes. In the 16th century, Russia was expanding actively to the east and south, but it lacked a convenient connection with European markets through the Baltic region. In addition, the Livonian Order had weakened, creating an opportunity for Moscow to increase its influence in the area.
🏰 At the beginning of the war, the Russian army successfully advanced against the Livonian Order. In 1558, the troops of Ivan IV entered Livonia and captured several important cities. However, Russia's successes worried neighboring states. The conflict gradually involved the Livonian Order, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, and Denmark. In 1561, the Livonian Order ceased to exist, and its lands became the subject of a struggle between several powers competing for influence in the Baltic region.
🔥 In the second half of the war, the position of the Russian state became much worse. Russia faced several enemies at the same time, while economic difficulties increased inside the country. In 1569, Poland and Lithuania united into the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, which became one of Moscow's main opponents. An important event was the defense of Pskov in 1581–1582, when the city managed to withstand the siege of the army of King Stephen Báthory of Poland and stopped further enemy advances.
🌍 The war ended in 1583 with the signing of the Treaty of Plus with Sweden and the earlier Treaty of Yam-Zapolsky with the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Russia lost most of its conquests in the Baltic region and failed to gain access to the Baltic Sea. The Livonian War weakened the country's economy, increased internal problems, and became one of the factors that later contributed to the Time of Troubles. However, the experience of the war showed the need to strengthen the army and continue Russia's efforts to expand its influence.
