Russian-Turkish War
⚔️ By the mid-18th century, the rivalry between Russia and the Ottoman Empire for influence over the northern Black Sea region had reached a new peak of tension. The pretext for war was Russia's interference in Polish affairs, which angered Istanbul, along with raids by the Crimean Tatars, vassals of the sultan, on Russian border territories. In 1768, the Ottoman Empire, encouraged by France and wary of growing Russian influence in Poland, declared war on Russia, expecting a swift victory.
🚢 The war was fought on several fronts and was marked by a series of outstanding victories for the Russian army and navy. Ground forces under the command of Pyotr Rumyantsev won brilliant victories at Larga and Kagul in 1770, crushing enemy forces that vastly outnumbered them. That same year, a Russian squadron under Alexei Orlov and Grigory Spiridov, after an unprecedented voyage from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, destroyed the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Chesma, one of the greatest triumphs in Russian naval history.
🏰 At the same time, Russian troops operated in Crimea, weakening the khan's authority and paving the way for the peninsula's future annexation. Prolonged fighting also continued in the Caucasus and the Danubian Principalities, where the Russian army repeatedly defeated Ottoman forces. By 1774, the Ottoman Empire, exhausted by military setbacks and internal difficulties, was forced to negotiate, leading to a decisive peace settlement.
📜 The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca of 1774 secured the war's remarkable outcomes: the Crimean Khanate gained independence from the Ottoman Empire, paving the way for its later annexation by Russia, while Russia itself gained access to the Black Sea with the fortresses of Kerch and Yenikale, along with the right of free passage for merchant ships through the Black Sea straits. This war significantly strengthened Russia's position as a Black Sea power and laid the foundation for further southward expansion in the following decades.
