Russian artillery of the 15th century
💥 Cannons first appeared in the Russian lands during the 14th century, but it was in the 15th century that artillery became an essential part of warfare. Firearms gradually became more reliable, more powerful, and more widely used in major Russian cities. Cannons were employed both in defending fortresses and during military sieges. Their arrival transformed traditional methods of war because even the strongest walls could no longer guarantee complete safety. Russian principalities actively adopted new military technologies, invited skilled craftsmen, and established their own foundries where various types of artillery pieces were cast. As a result, artillery became an increasingly important element of military planning and state defense.
🛠️ Most 15th-century cannons were either cast in bronze or forged from iron bars held together with metal hoops. They varied greatly in size. Smaller guns could be moved more easily around the battlefield, while massive siege cannons were used mainly during long military campaigns against fortified cities. At first, stone cannonballs were the most common ammunition, but iron shot gradually became more widespread because it caused greater damage. Black powder provided the explosive force needed to launch the projectiles. Although cannons were slow to reload and lacked great accuracy, a single successful shot could destroy sections of walls, damage gates, or inflict heavy losses on enemy troops.
🏰 During the defense of cities, cannons were placed on fortress walls and towers to control roads, bridges, and other approaches. Gunners fired at advancing soldiers, destroyed siege equipment, and made it dangerous for attackers to come close to the fortifications. At the same time, invading armies also began using artillery against defensive walls. This forced military engineers to redesign fortresses by building thicker walls, stronger towers, and replacing wooden structures with stone and brick whenever possible. The spread of artillery therefore had a direct influence on the evolution of Russian military architecture and significantly changed the design of defensive structures throughout the country.
⚔️ By the end of the 15th century, cannons had become an indispensable part of Russian armies. Artillery dramatically changed the nature of sieges, making them more destructive and reducing the importance of long blockades. Governments invested increasing resources in weapon production, gun foundries, and the training of skilled artillery crews because they recognized the growing importance of firearms. In the centuries that followed, Russian artillery continued to develop rapidly and eventually became one of the strongest in Europe. The 15th century marked the period when cannons firmly established themselves in Russian warfare and permanently transformed both the attack and defense of fortified cities.
