Rus Raids on Byzantium

Since diplomatic ties were still developing, they often relied on military expeditions to achieve their goals. These campaigns were not only attempts to seize valuable loot but also demonstrations of the growing strength of the new state. During the 9th century, a long period of rivalry and cooperation between Rus and Byzantium began, shaping the future of both civilizations. 🛶 The most famous event was the Rus campaign against Constantinople in 860. A large fleet appeared unexpectedly outside the Byzantine capital while much of the imperial army was engaged elsewhere. The Rus raided the suburbs, causing widespread fear among the city's inhabitants. Although Constantinople itself was not captured, the attack proved that the northern state had become a serious military force. After these events, Byzantine rulers paid much greater attention to their relations with Rus, combining stronger defenses with diplomatic negotiations and commercial agreements. 🤝 Over time, armed conflict gradually gave way to diplomacy.
