Precursors to the Time of Troubles

⚠️ The end of the 16th century was a period of serious crises for the Russian state, which prepared the ground for the Time of Troubles at the beginning of the 17th century. After the long reign of Ivan IV the Terrible, the country was weakened by wars, the Oprichnina, and economic difficulties. The Livonian War of 1558–1583 ended unsuccessfully for Russia, and the state lost some conquered territories while facing major financial problems. Agriculture and trade declined in many regions, and the population of some areas decreased significantly. 🌾 One of the main economic problems was the worsening position of peasants. The state needed stable taxes and labor forces to rebuild the country after years of war, so control over peasants became stronger. At the end of the 16th century, the first restrictions were introduced on peasants moving between landowners, becoming an important step in the development of serfdom. These changes caused dissatisfaction among different groups of the population and increased social tensions. ⚔️ Conflicts also grew between different social groups. Boyars and nobles competed for influence at the royal court, and after the death of Ivan IV, a struggle for power began around his successors. Ivan IV’s son Fyodor I was a weak ruler, so Boris Godunov gained great influence in governing the state. However, his position remained controversial because some nobles did not accept his authority and wanted to restore their own political influence. 👑 The dynastic crisis became especially important. In 1598, after the death of Fyodor I, the Rurik dynasty, which had ruled Russia for centuries, came to an end. The election of Boris Godunov as tsar did not fully solve the problem of legitimate power. Rumors about the survival of Tsarevich Dmitry and the appearance of impostors later became one of the causes of the Time of Troubles. Thus, economic difficulties, social conflicts, and the struggle for the throne weakened the state and created the conditions for the deep crisis of the early 17th century.
