Moscow of 16th Century

🏰 Moscow in the 16th century became one of the main centers of the Russian state and continued its transformation into the capital of a vast country. After the unification of Russian lands around Moscow, the city developed rapidly, its population increased, its borders expanded, and its importance as a political center grew. During the reigns of Ivan III and Ivan IV, Moscow became the location of the royal court, important government institutions, and major religious centers. The city gradually turned into a symbol of Russian unity and state power. ⛪ Great attention was given to construction and the decoration of Moscow during the 16th century. New buildings, fortifications, and cathedrals appeared in the Kremlin, demonstrating the power of the tsar and the Orthodox Church. In 1561, the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos was completed on Red Square, better known as Saint Basil’s Cathedral. The districts outside the Kremlin also developed, with new streets, marketplaces, and defensive structures being built to protect the city. 🛒 Moscow was an important trade center connecting different regions of Russia and foreign countries. Markets sold grain, furs, fabrics, weapons, and various handmade goods. Many crafts developed in the city, including blacksmithing, weapon production, jewelry making, clothing production, and construction.
