Kozelsk Defense
🏰 The defense of Kozelsk in 1238 became one of the most famous episodes of Batu Khan's first campaign against Rus'. After the destruction of many cities in Northeastern Rus', the Mongol army approached the small town of Kozelsk, located in the lands of Chernigov. Despite its small size and lack of major political importance, the town offered unusually strong resistance, which surprised the Mongol conquerors.
⚔️ The reason for such determined resistance was the desire of the inhabitants to defend their city and preserve their independence. The people of Kozelsk understood that the capture of the town would bring destruction and captivity. Despite the young age of the local prince, the residents and warriors united to organize the defense. They used the city's fortifications and actively resisted the large Mongol army, which had already captured many important Russian centers.
🛡️ The siege of Kozelsk lasted about seven weeks and became one of the longest during Batu Khan's campaign. The Mongols used siege equipment and attempted to destroy the city walls, but the defenders continued their resistance. During one of their attacks outside the walls, the inhabitants managed to damage the besieging army, destroying part of its equipment and killing many soldiers. However, the forces were unequal, and after a long siege, the Mongol army finally captured the city.
🔥 After the capture of Kozelsk, the city was completely destroyed, and many of its inhabitants were killed or taken into captivity. The fierce resistance caused both anger and respect among the Mongol warriors, which led to the city being called the "evil city". The defense of Kozelsk became a symbol of the courage of Russian people in the face of invasion. It showed that even small towns could resist powerful enemies, although the political fragmentation of Rus' prevented a successful defense against the Mongol invasion.
