Knyazhenia Olgu’s Campaigns
👑 The rule of Princess Olga in the 10th century became an important stage in the development of Kievan Rus'. After the death of Prince Igor in 945, Olga became the ruler of the state while her young son Sviatoslav was still a child. She faced serious challenges: it was necessary to restore order after the Drevlyan uprising, strengthen Kyiv's authority, and create a more effective system of government. Princess Olga became one of the first rulers of Rus' to carry out important administrative reforms.
⚔️ The main event at the beginning of her rule was the campaign against the Drevlyans. After Igor's death, the Drevlyans tried to increase their influence and even offered Olga marriage to their prince Mal. The princess decided to punish the rebellious tribe and organized a military campaign. As a result, the Drevlyan capital of Iskorosten was surrounded, and after a long siege the city was captured. This campaign strengthened Kyiv's authority and demonstrated the power of the princely government to other tribes.
🏛️ After her victory over the Drevlyans, Olga introduced important administrative reforms. She established the system of lessons — fixed amounts of tribute that dependent territories had to pay. She also created pogosts — special places for collecting tribute and controlling lands. These changes made the government of the state more organized and reduced the risk of future rebellions. Olga's reforms became one of the first examples of improving the financial and administrative system of Kievan Rus'.
✝️ At the end of her rule, Princess Olga adopted Christianity, becoming the first ruler of Rus' to officially accept the new faith. She visited Constantinople and established diplomatic relations with Byzantium. Although Christianity did not become the state religion during her lifetime, her actions prepared the conditions for the future Baptism of Rus' under Prince Vladimir. Olga's rule strengthened the Kyiv state, improved its system of administration, and became an important stage in the development of ancient Russian government.
