Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov
👑 Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov became the first tsar of the new dynasty, elected by the Zemsky Sobor in 1613 after the long years of the Time of Troubles. Young and inexperienced, he ascended the throne under extremely difficult circumstances: the country was devastated by war, the treasury was empty, and the authority of central power had been severely undermined. Nevertheless, his election marked the beginning of the gradual restoration of statehood and the stabilization of Russia's political life.
🕊️ One of the main directions of Mikhail Fyodorovich's activity was overcoming the consequences of the Time of Troubles through diplomacy and peace agreements. The Treaty of Stolbovo with Sweden and the Truce of Deulino with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were concluded, allowing an end to protracted military conflicts, though at the cost of territorial losses. These steps gave the country the necessary respite for internal recovery.
🏛️ In domestic policy, the tsar relied on the Zemsky Sobors, regularly convened to resolve the most important state matters, including taxation and military needs. His father, Patriarch Filaret, who returned from Polish captivity in 1619 and effectively became co-ruler with his son, played a major role in governance. Together they restored the prikaz administrative system, strengthened the financial system, and organized tax collection, gradually replenishing the depleted treasury.
⚔️ Mikhail Fyodorovich also paid attention to strengthening the country's defense capability, beginning army reforms with the involvement of foreign specialists and the creation of new-style regiments. His reign laid the foundation for the further strengthening of autocratic power and became the basis of legitimacy for the Romanov dynasty, which ruled Russia for more than three hundred years. The tsar's moderate and cautious policy, aimed at maintaining agreement with the boyars and clergy, helped avoid new upheavals and ensured the continuity of power.
